Srimad Bhagavad Gita Composition Mythology

The first verse of Srimad Bhagavad Gita’s fourth chapter ‘Jnanyoga‘ gives all the information about the history of Bhagavad Gita. In this verse Lord Krishna says – “Lord Krishna first imparted the knowledge of Gita to Suryadev“.

From this verse, we understand that Bhagavad Gita is not the stuff of speculation by Prakrit scholars. Bhagavad Gita has been influenced since time immemorial by the words of Lord Krishna. Then at the beginning of the Treta Yuga, Sun God gave the knowledge of this Bhagavad Gita to Manu.

Manu was the father of human society. Later this Bhagavad Gita was given by the father Manu to his son Sasagara, the lord of the earth and the father of the Raghu dynasty, Ikshaku. Lord Sri Ramachandra was incarnated in this Raghuvansha.

The appearance of the Gita during the Mahabharata

Knowledge of the Gita In the Mahabharata, Lord Krishna heard his friend Arjuna before the battle of Kurukshetra. Sanjay narrated his clairvoyance to King Dhritarashtra. Thus the knowledge of the Bhagavad Gita reached Sanjay i.e. Dhritarashtra.

When Maharshi Vedvyas composed the Mahabharata, he recited the entire text to Lord Ganesha, who wrote it down. Before giving the advice of Gita to Arjuna, Lord Krishna said I have taught the knowledge of this Gita to Suryadev before you.

Who is the Writer of Srimad Bhagavad Gita

Maharshi Vedavyas is the author of the Srimad Bhagavad Gita. Maharshi Vedvyas wanted an author to write the epic Bhagavad Gita, who could write continuously without stopping the flow of his thoughts. For this, he remembers Lord Ganesha.

He asked Lord Ganesha to write this epic poem. Ganeshaji agreed to write but he put a condition. The condition was that the Maharshi should not stop speaking even for a moment. If he stops talking then Lord Ganesha will stop writing.

Maharishi accepted this condition of Lord Ganesha and he also put a condition to Lord Ganesha. The condition was that Lord Ganesha should not write anything without understanding it and before writing each line Ganesha Ji should understand its meaning.

Ganeshji accepted his condition. Thus the two scholars sat face to face and started composing the Bhagavad Gita. When Maharshi Vedvyas began to speak quickly, Ganesha also started writing at that speed.

Lord Ganesha’s pen broke due to his writing speed and to keep up with Maharishi’s speed, he broke one of his teeth and dipped it in ink to keep writing. With this, Lord Ganesha felt that he had become a little arrogant about his writing speed and was underestimating Maharishi’s ability.

Maharishi Vedvyas began to speak with great intensity to break Ganeshaji’s pride. Then Maharishi realized that Ganeshaji’s intellect and devotion were unbroken. Along with this, he gave Ganesha a new name “Ekdanta”. This was the legend of the Srimad Bhagavad Gita composed by the combined work of Maharshi Vedvyas and Ganeshaji.
