Hon’ble Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee officially launched the Kanyashree scheme on 8 March 2013 to prevent child marriage and provide school education to girls from all poor families in West Bengal.

Objectives of Kanyashree Prakalpa

Although the indirect objectives of the Kanyashree Prakalpa are multifaceted, if we look at the actual direct objectives, we will find the prevention of child marriage and making girls school-oriented. 

One of the objectives of the Kanyashree Prakalpa is to highlight the need for women’s education in society. The Prakalpa has two components.

1. The first component is the annual grant of Rs.750.
2. The second component is a one-time Rs. 25,000.

Under this scheme, an annual scholarship i.e. 750 rupees will be given every year to 13 to 18-year-olds from class VIII to XII. About 18 lakh girls are enrolled in this scheme every year to provide an annual base grant of Rs.750. 

But to enjoy this annual scholarship benefit, the daughter should be studying in any recognized West Bengal government school and their parent’s annual income should be less than one lakh twenty thousand. The student must be unmarried.

The age of the daughter should be above 18 years and below 19 years to get one time Rs 25000. Must have passed Higher Secondary or equivalent qualification from any recognized institution of West Bengal Govt. or be educated in any vocational or technical education.
